The apartment is a850sqft condominium unit located in the heart of Singapore’s Bukit Timah district. Home to an art collector and her poodle, the space user appreciates splashes of colours and curated fine sculptures.

Design Issue:
The apartment built in 1999, is in considerably aged condition. Due to its existing layout, natural daylight and air ventilation is rather poor within its interior spaces. The poorly designed interior not only limits the possibility for the homeowner to display and expand her art collection, it also removes the enchantment and appeal of the precious art works due to mess and clutters.

Design Concept:
As the homeowner is notably an art collector, we investigate the epistemology of ‘Art’ through the framework of neuroaesthetics, which explores how art and design stimulate emotional and cognitive responses in the brain. Art, in essence, is not only a medium for an artist’s emotions and perspectives but also a powerful tool for engaging the viewer’s neural pathways, evoking feelings and creating connections. Understanding this, the design concept aims to create a spatial environment that acts as a passive canvas, designed to engage the homeowner’s sensory perception and emotional state. Through neuroaesthetic principles, the space becomes more than just a backdrop for her art collection—it is shaped to enhance how the homeowner perceives, feels, and interacts with both her art and her surroundings.

By carefully crafting the layout, light, textures, and colors, the space invites a dynamic experience where the homeowner can 'color' her emotions and influence her mood through her selections of art. This design approach goes beyond aesthetic beauty; it focuses on how the brain responds to spatial stimuli, enabling a deeper emotional connection between the homeowner, her environment, and her curated art collection, ultimately promoting well-being, creativity, and mindfulness.
